The Story of the Firefighter, The Owl and the Oracle!

A Journey of a Managed CIO

One day a busy firefighter was in the forest fighting yet another forest fire. He became separated from his group. As he walked through the forest he can see all the fires he had put out over the years. He thought to himself “boy I wish there was another way”. People just don’t understand what all these fires do to the forest. Such a waste of resources, time and money! If only there was a better way.
Just then the firefighter came across a Wise Old Owl. The Wise Owl spoke to the firefighter “Say you look tired and lost”. The firefighter responded “Yes I am, I was separated from my group and I can’t seem to get back to them” he continued “We are constantly fighting these forest fires, we are all very tired. I wish there was a better way”. Just then the Owl flew closer and spoke “There is, follow me! There is a better way”. As the firefighter followed the owl he noticed an area of the forest he had never been in. The forest looked slightly burnt but nothing like where he came from. In a short time they came across a small village

They soon approach and huge Castle at the top of the hill and the surrounding area appears to be so many smaller villages. As they begin to walk through they notice not only have they never seen this part of the forest they could tell the villages have never been touched by fire. All the houses and buildings are shinny and are made of brick and stone. They begin to talk to many of the villagers to try and understand what is going on here. The approach a small merchant, “You there, how is it this village has never been devastated by fire? Why are your houses made of brick and stone?” The merchant responded “It is all thanks to the Oracle! He lives in the castle at top the hill. He looks out for all the villages. He has helped us transform our homes and businesses from straw to stones and bricks. This has helped keep them safe from fire”. As they spoke to other villagers they all had similar responses, all the villagers seem to be in good spirts. They are doing a lot of business with each other. Food and supplies appears to be plenty. They decided they need to see the Oracle!

The firefighter and the owl were stunned and just then the firefighter started to hear voices screaming for him. Soon he woke up. “It was all a dream” he said to himself but maybe I can make it a reality!
A few days later he was walking through the forest and came upon a village. He began to talk to them as they were rebuilding their village. He stood on top of a boulder and spoke out to the village “What if there was a better way”……

The firefighter asked the Owl, Where are we? How is this village here, there are so many fires in the forest how do these people live here? The owl spoke this village has seen its share of fires but it survives because a group of my owls watch over this village. We patrol the area around the village and pick up anything that could cause a fire. We make sure the every house and merchant in the village has smoke alarms and made of fire retarded materials. Every once in a while a fire flares up but because of our preventative measures they are quickly put out.
As the Firefighter and the Owl continue walking through the village and all the way to the other side. They notice a bright light coming from the north. The Owl doesn’t recall ever seeing this light and being busy with this village never really travels too far out of the area. However curiosity gets the best of him and the decided to walk towards the light.

They walked for days and finally approached the front of the castle. They assumed they would encounter guards and resistance to getting into the castle. To their surprise they were able to walk right into the castle without resistance. They asked to speak with the Oracle. As they waited they envisioned the Oracle a wise old man or a magician or a wizard. After a few minutes they were granted to enter the Oracle’s chamber.
When they finally met the Oracle they were stunned, he was a regular human just like the firefighter. In fact he was a firefighter. The Oracle spoke “I was once like you firefighter! Fighting fire after fire. I became tired and weary. The villagers never learn just doing things that causes forest fires. Every time we put the fires out another one begins. One day there was a huge fire not far from where we are right now. I got separated from my brigade and came upon this hill and the villages below. I thought to myself if only we could teach the villagers how to prevent fires themselves it would reduce fires. Then I began to think but what if we not only teach them how to prevent fires but determine the items that are likely to go on fire and either get rid of them or protect them.” I gathered the villages below and explained I would like to help them prevent fires from ever hitting these villages. I am an experienced firefighter and I know so many ways a fire can start. Using my knowledge I want to transform the villages! I explained it would be expensive in the beginning to gather the materials and make the changes. It would be difficult at first to overcome what you are used to doing. But soon we will transform the villages and the time and money you save on rebuilding the villages after all the fires will be worth the investment.
Not all the villages were willing to change so I worked with the ones that did. We changed the houses and merchant buildings from wood and straw to brick and stone. We cleared the areas around the villages of flammable material. Not long after transforming the first few villages a fire came through here again. The villages that we were able to transform remained standing barely harmed and the villages that refused were burnt once again to the ground.
It wasn’t long after that, all the villages began to change as they saw the prosperity that the villages that didn’t burn from the fire had seen. The villages that had changed were able to focus their attention on making the village better and growing more crops.
